Book Marketing


You know I told you the easiest part of a book is the writing and the hardest is getting it published. I was wrong. The hardest part is the MARKETING. It’s a time consuming minefield and for novice writers it can make or break your book. At times over the last few months, I have been close to throwing in the towel just out of sheer frustration. I find cleaning a great reliever of frustration, or swimming.

After reading hours of literature and surfing the net, I find myself going round in circles reading contradiction after contradiction. My advice: MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN. Your greatest asset is YOU and people don’t know of YOU unless you tell them about YOU. It’s not bragging!!! YOU! YOU! YOU! Raise your profile. No one will do it for you. So no matter how hard it is to put on a smile, you need to do it for YOU. And do you know what?  YOU CAN DO IT!

Whatever your background, wherever you have been – dust yourself down, pick yourself up and GO FOR IT!


This week is usual madness – two trips to Sheffield, active marketing for Beyond the Past (could be renamed making a nuisance of myself), writing the sequel, Mummy duties and all the other mundane yet wonderful things that are thrown my way. Persistence and hard work are everything.

Only last week I learned the extent some people will go to, to twist your words around. In desperation to start the New Year eradicating all the bad, I enlisted the help of a techy friend and it is handy having an honours degree in computing along with a curious mind. In the space of ten minutes we found multiple accounts set up by one person. It wasn’t hard even without the technology the authorities have. Those accounts have now been blocked but more will turn up, we know they will. There is nothing more I can do because I now have evidence to show that whatever I write my words are twisted. What I don’t understand is why they read my stuff. It would be like me reading all the articles by Nigel Farage! It would NEVER happen EVER, trust me. Who said, "Size doesn't matter!!"

I was disappointed to learn my book couldn't be judged in the Theakston's Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year awards because of it's size. Yes, whoever said size doesn't matter was wrong, clearly it does. In truth, the disappointment only lasted a couple of minutes. Come on, I was absolutely flattered and honoured to have even been nominated for such a prestigious award for my DEBUT novel. The thought that professionals in the literary world considered my work worthy of a nomination fills me with overwhelming pride and gives me goose bumps every time I think of it. The Theakston's Old Peculiar Crime Festival is being held at the Old Swan Hotel in Harrogate and features incredible writers such as Ann Cleeves, Robert Galbraith aka J K Rowling, Lynda LaPlante, John Harvey and Val McDermid to name but a few. Menieres Madness

I live with pain every day. Some days it’s a dull ache other days it feels like my ears are going to explode. The buzzing drives me to distraction especially when trying to listen to people in crowded places. BUT the worst part of this unpredictable illness is the frustration of not being able to do the things you want or need to do. Monday started off with me writing over 10,000 words in one day. I was so pleased with myself. I had a plan for the week after spending the weekend nursing Lucas through yet another stomach bug caught at school. The amount of letters I get home from school telling me I’ not allowed to send my child to school until at least 48 hours after any sickness yet someone must be sending their child in because my cops for it every time! Anyway I should know by now that planning a week is futile. Monday night I started to feel ill and by Tuesday morning the floors were moving.
